Materials per group

2 apples

Knife

Ruler

Beaker

Ribena

Cutting board

News paper

Using an apple, Ribena and the principles of diffusion we can gain a detailed understanding of Surface area to Volume ratio and why it is crucial to cell survival.

Method

  1. Start by cutting the apple into 3 cubes.
  1. Place each of the cubes into a beaker of Ribena
  2. Allow them to sit for 24 hours
  3. Remove each of the cubes and cut them in half.
  4. Measure the distance of Ribena that has diffused into the apple.
