Balanced Diets

Think about what you ate today. All the food you ate contains energy. An excess or lack of calories/energy can lead to malnourishment.

Malnourishment can be caused from eating the wrong amount or the wrong types of food.

All the food your eat has energy in it. We measure this in Joules (J) or kilojoules (kJ).

1 kJ = 1000 J

Starvation means your body isn’t get enough calories. This means the food you eat is less than the energy you use.

Being seriously under weight can lead to

Eating too much food or food which is very high in energy (fatty foods) can cause you to put excess weight on.

All this extra energy is stored as fat under the skin.

Being seriously over weight can lead to

Being seriously over weight is being obese.

Being deficient in vitamins or minerals can be damaging to a persons health.

Not having enough of a specific vitamin or mineral is called a Deficiency.

Not having enough vitamin D can cause rickets. This is where your bones become weak and fragile.
