Every living thing on earth requires energy. From the smallest bacteria to the biggest elephant they need energy to survive.

This process of getting energy is referred to as Respiration.

It is a chemical reaction, where cells break down glucose to give them energy to grow, repair and move.

We can break respiration up into 2 types

Respiration

Aerobic respiration

When oxygen is present our cells undergo aerobic respiration.
The glucose that we eat, is combine with the oxygen to produce Carbon Dioxide, water and energy

Anaerobic respiration

During anaerobic respiration cells don’t need oxygen. They simple break down glucose into energy and lactic acid.

Although this may sound easier, the amount of energy you gain is significantly less than with oxygen.
