Year 9 iGCSE - Biology Biological Molecules

Biological molecules are everywhere. All organic matter is made of it.

Bread is made of Carbohydrates

Meat is made of Proteins

Fat is made of Lipids

DNA is made of Nucleic Acids

Your body needs these nutrients to grow, repair and generate usable energy (metabolism).

The table bellow shows the elements which make these biological molecules

Every biological molecule, has building blocks, which come together to form a larger molecule.

Carbohydrates are abundant in daily life. The bread, cereal, chips and ice cream you eat is made of carbohydrates.

Lipids are fats.  Lipids are an extremely important part of cells. They make up the cell membrane, which encompass the cell.

One of the most important characteristic of lipids is that they are insoluble in water (don’t dissolve), and that they are Hydrophobic.

Proteins build up our muscles. Without them we couldn’t move. However proteins are much more valuable, they make up enzymes which are extremely important in all biological reactions, they are embedded in the membrane, which allows big molecules in and out.

Nucleic acids. You’ve probably heard of the first 3, however you may never have heard of nucleic acids.

DNA and RNA are types of Nucleic acids. Just like every other macromolecule we have small building block (Nucleotides) which make up larger molecules (Genes).
