Molecules can move through the membrane without the use of energy (Passive) or with the assistance of energy (active).

One thing you will notice, is due to the structure and polarity of the Phospholipids, Non-polar molecules will move faster through the membrane than Polar molecules.

 This is because the center of the lipid bilayer (the fatty acid tails) is nonpolar and does not readily interact with polar molecules or ions.
